Bright lights lead to dim actions

Just after 1 AM on August 27th, a Newnan Police Department officer traveling on Greenville St. near it’s intersection with Savannah St. observed a vehicle heading towards it that failed to dim it’s high beams as it approached and passed them.

The NPD Officer made a u-turn to get behind the vehicle and conduct a traffic stop. While attempting to catch back up with the vehicle as it continued towards the court square, the Officer observed the vehicle make multiple puzzling lane changes. The Officer was finally able to get behind the vehicle and conduct a traffic stop resulting in the vehicle, a Tesla, pulling in a parking spot in front of the historic court house.

According to the incident report as soon as the Tesla, which was bearing a Hawaii license plate, stopped, the driver, identified as Sherquana Fontasha Adams, 29, of Opleika, AL, exited the vehicle advancing on the Officer before they could exit their patrol vehicle and became immediately confrontational refusing to get back in the vehicle even after being instructed to multiple times.

According to the Officer during this initial exchange Adams identified herself as an Opelika Police Officer and stated that her badge was inside her vehicle. The Officer also noted a strong smell of marijuana emanating from Adams. Regardless, the NPD Officer told Adams that this was a traffic stop due to her failure to dim her headlights and requested Adams’ driver license which she refused to provide despite multiple request and instead demanded the Officers name. After providing their name the Officer requested additional units to respond due to the erratic and confrontational behavior being displayed by Adams.

Additional Officers quickly arrived and the initial Officer again requested Adams provide her drivers license. In response, Adams began quickly saying numbers and was again asked to provide her physical license and she continued to refuse. Wanting to move the incident along the Officer removed their notebook and asked Adams to provide her license number which she now also refused to provide.

She’s a fighter

After refusing to provide either her physical licesne or repeat her license number, Adams decided to show one of the backup Officers her phone showing an image depicting Adams at a gun range with a law enforcement officer providing instruction on firing a rifle.

The initial Officer regained Adams focus and informed her that if she refused to provide her license information she’d be taken to jail, to which Adams responded, ” well then I guess I’m going to jail tonight.”

The Officer then advised Adams that she was under arrest and grabbed her arms to place them behind her back. Adams resisted Officers attempts to bring her hands behind her back for handcuffing. As Officers struggled with Adams she stated ” I’m going to beat your fucking ass! ” Adams was eventually handcuffed but continued to resist Officers as they attempted to place her safely in the back of a patrol vehicle for transport. As 3 Officers worked to place and secure Adams in the back seat she again stated ” I’ll fucking kill you! ” She was eventually secured in the patrol vehicle.

A probable cause search was conducted on Adams vehicle due to the odor of marijuana emanating from it however no marijuana or contraband was located in the vehicle.

After being read her Miranda warning and indicating she understood she was asked abou the odor of marijuana and she stated the odor was due to her shaking hands with someone who had smoked earlier.

The math ain’t mathing

Adams was then asked about her statement regarding working for law enforcement. She admitted she was not actually a police officer and then stated she was a ” brand ambassador ” for  ” Studio 6, ” and had attended law enforcement training and therefore had the right to claim being law enforcement. She stated that her certificate for this training was located within a bible in the vehicle. Officers located the certificate and found that it was a certificate of completion for the Opelika Police Department’s Citizen Police Academy. Adams stated she wanted to be law enforcement but couldn’t because she has no self control.

Adams was then asked where she was coming from and traveling to. She explained that she was coming from her job in Alabama and headed to Greenville, South Carolina to get her license reinstated. She continued that she’d paid $600 due to her license being suspended however she’d have to go to Greenville in person to have reinstated before returning to Alabama and have it transferred.

When asked about the vehicle she was driving and who it belonged to she told Officers that it was her boss’ vehicle and that it’d been rented through Turo. Officers then asked for clarification regarding her employment and while she initially stated ” Studio 6 ” she confirmed she meant ” Motel 6 ” and that it was located across the street from the Justice Center in Opelika, AL.

Editors Note: A quick search confirms that a number of Motel 6 locations within GA and AL have changed their name to Studio 6 as part of a rebranding meant to signify their focus on more long term rental options.

Due to having no one able to meet Officers in a reasonable time and take possession of the vehicle it was towed from the scene by a next list wrecker.

Naked twerking anyone?

Adams was transported to the Coweta County Jail for booking. What occurred when they arrived is best explained by sharing the Officers narrative entry within the incident report.

Adams was placed in Holding Cell #4 while I completed her charges using the jail`s computer. While working on the computer, I observed Adams in the holding cell becoming more and more agitated. She eventually took off all of her clothes and was completely naked in the cell, and pacing back and forth. At one point she was sitting on the concrete wall in the cell, and at another point, she was dancing and “twerking.”

Jail staff eventually entered the cell and ended up recovering a marijuana cigarette (“roach”) from the concrete wall in the cell. Additionally, she spontaneously uttered “yeah, that`s my blunt” to jail staff, effectively admitting to crossing the guard line and possessing it within the jail.
