Multiple agencies take part in traffic operation targeting Exit 41 off ramp
Units from multiple agencies that make up the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety ( GoHS ) Regional Taskforce carried out a traffic operation in Coweta County Wednesday night. The operation centered around the southbound exit ramp ( Exit 41 – Moreland ) on Interstate 85 / South Highway 29.
According to images taken from a nearby DOT camera, the operation included the placement of 2 units, with their blue lights activated, beside the southbound interstate lanes just south of the Exit 41 off ramp. This tactic is often used in traffic operations that take place off interstate exits with the premise being those with known issues, from expired tags to warrants, will exit the interstate in an attempt to bypass whatever law enforcement issue is ahead.
Multiple units, including local units, were located at the end of the southbound off ramp preforming license, registration and other checks commonly preformed during these operations.
Due to the Juneteenth holiday open records are currently unavailable so it’s unknown the number of arrests made and for what charges. This article will be updated with that information as soon as the information is avialable.
Coweta County Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit
Radar data confirms claims by witnesses ( and supplied photos ) that the Coweta County Sheriff’s Department Aviation unit was in the area during the hours of the operation.
The Aviation unit and it’s Bell Jet Ranger helicopter is based at the Newnan Coweta Airport which is located less than 1/2 a mile from the location of the operation.
At this point there’s no information regarding a particular use of the Aviation unit during the traffic operation outside of it’s probable use of the time period for needed training and FAA required air time for both the air frame and the pilots.
The CCSO does not comment on the use or operations in which their Aviation unit partakes by policy.
Operation just part of planned Traffic Operations
This operation is one in several operations that GoHS does throughout the year as part of their commitment to increasing safety on the states highways. The yearly 100 Days of Summer H.E.A.T. ( Highway Enforcement of Aggressive Traffic ) campaign is one of the many multi-jurisdictional highway safety programs that is slated for the summer holiday season that runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
The last major operation in our area was December 2024’s Thunder Task Force that saw a large multi-jurisdictional operation being carried out throughout the county over several days.
