Protestors Pack Court Square in Downtown Newnan

Members of the local community took part Saturday in part of national day of planned protest under the banner of ” No King “.

According to casual counts over 150 community members representing all ages and demographics joined together with signs and banners on the Court Square to lend their voice to their common cause in denouncing President Trump and the current immigration actions being preformed by ICE agents across the nation.

The protestors spent the several hours the protest was scheduled for to promote their message, interact amongst themselves with activities that included singing, sharing stories and interacting with members of the community on both sides of the issue.

Before ending the group came together in a moment of silence for the multiple individuals that had been shot early Saturday morning in Minnesota that included two state political office holders and their spouses. Sadly, State Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed in the attack while State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife were both wounded.

With threats made against the protestors on social media, law enforcement was standing by ready to ensure the safety of everyone in the community.

Thankfully, and as a testament to protestors and our community, there were no reports of violence or hostility during the event, leading to a beautiful and peaceful day for all involved.

Nationwide Day of Protest

The Newnan ” No King’s Day ” protest was one of roughly 1800 protest planned across the country on Saturday. Other cities in Georgia included Columbus, Atlanta, Macon, Savannah, and others.

The protest was scheduled to coincide with President Trump’s Birthday and a military parade celebrating the 250th birthday of the US Army that included a large military parade in Washington, DC.
